Badly Drawn Boy Melts Down Onstage in L.A., Threatens Retirement

After hitting a rut in the last few years, alt-pop bard Badly Drawn Boy (aka Damon Gough) recently said that he was in the midst of creative resurgence, unveiling plans for a trilogy of new albums. Now, it seems that the sensitive songwriter has fallen victim to his old insecurities, as on Wednesday night (December 15) he had a meltdown onstage at the Troubadour in Los Angeles.

LA Weekly has a detailed first-hand account of the incident, which says that Gough spent the first few songs griping about the sound. He repeatedly stopped and started his songs, complaining, "All I've got are these fucking monitors and I can't hear myself."

And while this sounds much like how Gough behaved at his recent Toronto show, things only got worse, as fans yelled out words of encouragement and Gough responded with anger, throwing around the c-word and telling one concertgoer, "Shut up, you stupid bitch."

He even threatened retirement, saying, "I'm going to ruin my career tonight! I don't give a fuck. I want to go home to my kids." He later continued, "After tonight I'm never playing live again" and said, "Seriously, do you think I want to be here? Why tour America when nobody's buying the record? I should just open a shop somewhere."

He eventually left the stage for 15 minutes and half of the crowd reportedly walked out. Although he was still grouchy when he returned, he eventually turned his mood around, apologizing for his behaviour and thanking the fans for staying. He admitted, "This night has been a complete disaster for me," before finishing his set and performing covers of "Like a Virgin" and "Thunder Road."
