Arthur Russell Gets Tribute Featuring Dan Boeckner, Chad VanGaalen, Owen Pallett, Twin Shadow, Hot Chip
Since 1989, the Red Hot organization has been raising funds for the fight against AIDS via a series of themed compilations, with recent variations including Dark Was the Night and (Red) Hot + Fela. Next up is a tribute to the late, great experimental musician Arthur Russell, who died of complications due to AIDS in 1992.

Pitchfork reports that it has partnered with Red Hot to co-curate the collection, titled Red Hot + Arthur Russell: This Is How We Walk on the Moon. A tracklisting has yet to be delivered, but artists set to cover Russell's oeuvre include Handsome Furs' Dan Boeckner, Chad VanGaalen, Twin Shadow, Hot Chip, Devendra Banhart, Nico Muhly and Owen Pallett, Okkervil River's Will Sheff, Robyn, Laurel Halo, Cut Copy, Washed Out, José González, Scissor Sisters, Sam Amidon, Ólöf Arnalds, Sandro Perri, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, Javelin, and more.

A trailer for the collection, which you can see below, explains that the artists involved have selected songs from all over Russell's prolific career, which ranged from his late '70s avant-disco work to his cello-imbued pieces to his "Buddhist bubblegum music."

"I moved to New York because of Arthur Russell -- he's my favourite musician," Banhart said in a statement. "Over the last two years, I've listened to him constantly and have been reading [Tim Lawrence's 2009 Russell biography] called Hold On to Your Dreams about how downtown, experimental, underground disco and classical composition and all those scenes blended together."

A release date has yet been set, but the project will be crowd-sourced through Kickstarter. Depending on how much money fans contribute to the project, you can nab yourself anything from a digital download of the set, to tickets to an exclusive loft party, a spot in an upcoming promo video, and an executive producer credit.
