Pop princess Ariana Grande is currently prepping the follow-up to last year's massively successful My Everything, but she's taken to Twitter to address the fact that the media only seem to care about the men she dates.
In an essay self-published to Twitter over the weekend, Grande calls out the media for focusing too much on her break-up with rapper Big Sean, and the ensuing rumours of a blossoming relationship with One Direction's Niall Horan.
"I am tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man's past, present or future property/possession," she wrote. "I do not belong to anyone but myself and neither do you."
She goes on to condemn the media for asking questions about boys, despite the fact that: "I'm currently making the best music I've ever made in my life, having the best time of my life on tour… and working my ass off every single day."
After explaining that she comes from a family of feminists, the 21-year-old singer takes issue with the double standard that "if a woman has a lot of sex… she's a slut," but when "a man talks or raps freely about all the women (or more commonly used 'bitches'/'hoes' … how lovely) he's had, he is regaled."
Despite claiming to be the happiest she's ever been — without a man by her side — Grande notes that the "double standard" and "misogyny" are sadly ever present, and encourages her fans and followers to strive for equality in the industry.
