If the band's dramatic stage backdrop hadn't already announced the epicness of Amon Amarth, a few seconds of intro music made it clear. In moments, the Swedes' giant rumble and roar was sweeping over the crowd, introducing their signature interpretations of the Norse sagas. In between new songs ("Deceiver of the Gods" and "Father of the Wolf"), Amon Amarth offered a sampling of tracks from the past decade or so, finally culminating with the speed and tight brutality of "Twilight of the Thunder God." In between songs, ideal frontman and modern day Viking Johan Hegg showed off his French and a warm persona, dedicating a song to the audience in one moment and urging them to growl along in another (whether we knew the words or not). There was a celebratory air to this performance — it wasthe end of Amon Amarth's seven-week Mayhem Festival outing — so even when focused on "Death in Fire" or "Destruction of the Universe," they managed to convince us that death and destruction can make for a damn good time.
