Modern cabaret great Amanda Palmer has announced that in addition to her participation in a TED talk in Vancouver today (March 19), she's playing a last-minute show at the city's Vogue Theatre.
Palmer announced the concert last night on her blog, billing the event as a "Free, All Ages Ninja Gig." The show follows her participation in TED's "All Star Session 3: Where Are We Now?" talk this afternoon at the Vancouver Convention Centre, where she'll speak alongside educators, legal activists and psychologists. Her show, she expects, will likely be more chaotic than this afternoon's sharing of ideas.
"TED, if you know much about it, is super fucking organized, and there's very little realtime cross-over with the people here in TED-land and the population of Vancouver," she wrote, hinting at the hefty gap between the convention's price tag versus her pay-what-you-want gig, adding "let us crush the fence."
Palmer reported that she put the feelers out over Twitter recently and was contacted by the Vogue, who "generously offered us the keys to their space." The venue roughly fits 1,100 people and entry will be on a first-come, first-served basis. If you can make it out, you may want to get in line soon, ahead of the 9 p.m. show time.
Tying into her TED appearance, Palmer's goal "was to rope in a handful of scientists and other bizarro TED speakers," and she's hinted that guests tonight may include a Harvard professor and guitar-strumming astronaut Chris Hadfield, as well as musician Bora Yoon and Vancouver klezmer lover Geoff Berner.
While technically free, Palmer is suggesting a $10 to $20 donation, which will go to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.
