Alex Chilton's death last year prompted a wave of tributes, so it's only fitting that the legendary songwriter is set to receive his own posthumous compilation. Entitled Free Again: The "1970" Sessions, this 20-song collection features solo songs recorded after his band the Box Tops broke up and before Big Star formed. It will be out on January 10 through Omnivore Recordings.
This is hardly the first time this era has been mined for material, as past albums like Lost Decade and 1970 have included tracks from the sessions. This latest compilation, however, includes six previously unissued recordings.
Bear in mind that all of these unreleased tracks will only be available on the CD and digital versions of Free Again. The LP only contains 12 songs, but to sweeten the deal, the first 1,500 copies will come on clear vinyl. There will also be 500 pressings of a limited bundle containing the LP, plus a seven-inch with two unreleased songs.
