Paul Feig is currently working on a new Ghostbusters film starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. The film has been hotly contested by some doofuses who balk at an all-female leading cast. Those morons aside, however, the new film has even received the blessing of the original's Bill Murray.
In news too good to keep a secret, the beloved comedic star has admitted that he's returning to the film for a brief cameo. He recently spoke to Vulture to explain why he's decided to come back.
"You know, they were incredibly nice to ask me, and I really enjoyed being there," he told the magazine. "They have such a jolly group, and they are going to have great success with this project. I didn't want to overshadow [them] or anything, and I feel really good about it.... I like those girls a lot. I mean, I really do. They are tough to say no to. And Paul is a real nice fellow."
Murray was famously uninterested in revisiting his role as Peter Venkman, so much so that the third Ghostbusters film was delayed for decades. He admitted that he was never really interested in coming back, but added that he did so as a way to give this film his blessing.
"I thought about it for a very long time," he said. "Like, many, many months. No, that's not right. I was seriously thinking about this for years, really … It kept eating at me, and I really respect those girls. And then I started to feel like if I didn't do this movie, maybe somebody would write a bad review or something, thinking there was some sort of disapproval [on my part]."
The new Ghostbusters film opens on July 22 of next year. Some photos from the set are available here.
