British music trivia quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks has been running strong since 1996, but those days are now over, since the BBC has pulled the plug on the show.
"After 28 series we've decided not to bring Never Mind the Buzzcocks back to the BBC," a spokesperson said. "This will create space for new entertainment formats in the future. We'd like to thank the team at Talkback, Rhod Gilbert, all the brilliant hosts over the years and of course Noel [Fielding] and Phill [Jupitus] for the years of enjoyment they've given BBC Two viewers."
For those unfamiliar with Never Mind the Buzzcocks, it was formatted as a contest in which the show's host presided over two teams, each with a resident captain and two celebrity guest members.
Mark Lamarr hosted the first 17 series, while subsequent series were hosted by Simon Amstell or a rotating cast of guests. The final season was presented by Rhod Gilbert (pictured above, along with team captains Phill Jupitus and Noel Fielding), although the show's ratings never recovered after Amstell left. Jupitus was the only person to appear in all 270 episodes.
As for the stars who appeared on the show over the years, they included Amy Winehouse, Billy Bragg, Iggy Azalea, Charli XCX, Will Smith, Steve Aoki, Jonathan Ross, Midge Ure (Ultravox), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Mani (the Stone Roses/Primal Scream), Boy George, Guy Garvey (Elbow), Alison Goldfrapp, Alice Cooper, Bez (Happy Mondays), members of Spice Girls, Robyn, Dev Hynes (Blood Orange), Mark Ronson, Stephen Fry, James Corden, Russell Brand, Martha Wainwright, Jamie Cullum, Rita Ora, Dizzee Rascal and many more.
Famously, the show's sarcastic sense of humour led a few guests to storm off-set, including Lemmy (Motörhead), Samuel Preston (Ordinary Boys) and Huey Morgan (Fun Lovin' Criminals).
