Alex Winter to Direct Frank Zappa Documentary

Though he'll always be Bill S. Preston from the Bill & Ted movies to us, Alex Winter's film career has had an impressive second act in the director's chair. Recent credits for the former actor include the internet documentary Deep Web and the web series film adaptation Smosh: The Movie. Up next, he'll take on the life and legacy of late rock freak Frank Zappa.

Variety reports that Winter will direct the film from his own script. He'll also produce the film alongside Glen Zipper. Better yet, the Zappa Family Trust has given the yet-to-be-titled project their blessing.

"There has yet to be a definitive, authorized documentary on the extraordinary life and work of Frank Zappa," Winter said, hopefully in a Bill S. Preston voice. "I am beyond thrilled to be embarking on this journey. Our tale will be told primarily in Frank's own words; he will be our guide through this journey."

Frank Zappa's son Ahmet Zappa added, "This is not an easy story to tell and we trust that Alex truly understands the complex and multi-faceted man that my father was."

The Frank Zappa documentary is expected to be ready by 2017.
