About Review Ratings

Exclaim! reviews for albums, concerts, film, DVD and videogames are all ranked on a scale from 0 to 10 in whole numbers (no fractions) reflecting the quality of the work. Ratings are determined by the individual contributor and are the opinion of the contributor and not necessarily of Exclaim! Media as a whole.

Below you'll find a very general assessment of how to interpret each number ranking.

  1. An essential classic that will stand the test of time.
  2. Near an artist's potential peak; a "Best of the Year" contender.
  3. Among the best of the genre, a must-have for fans.
  4. A very good effort with some minor flaws.
  5. Fans will find something worthwhile; less so for the merely curious.
  6. Average. The good doesn't outweigh the bad.
  7. Moments of competence but forgettable.
  8. Bland, dull and nondescript.
  9. Actively bad, a waste of time, effort and resources.
  10. Terrible.
  11. Worthless. A waste of resources to make and consume.

Shout-out to Blurt Magazine's Bill Holmes for compiling a great argument for review ranking that we've totally cribbed from.
